Data erasure for reusable equipment

When working equipment is intended for reuse, removing the information it holds needs a deliberate process. We can discuss data erasure for suitable devices and physical destruction where erasure is unsuitable or cannot be verified.

Match the method to the media

Hard drives, SSDs and embedded storage do not all respond to the same commands. The available method depends on the device, its condition, access to its storage and your organisation's policy. Tell us whether the equipment must remain usable, whether it can be removed from site and which records you need.

A normal file deletion, quick format or factory reset should not be assumed to prove that all data has been addressed. We will discuss how the selected process is checked and what happens to devices that fail or cannot be accessed.

Plan for exceptions

Some devices are damaged, locked or unsuitable for the proposed erasure route. Set aside failed drives and agree a different treatment before disposal. Options may include hard drive destruction or SSD destruction, depending on the media.

Keep a clear inventory if you need to reconcile the equipment returned for reuse, recycled or destroyed. We will confirm the available verification and documentation for the agreed service, rather than assuming every item can receive an identical result.

Ask about your equipment

Send the device types, approximate count, condition, postcode and intended outcome for the hardware. to discuss the available erasure and disposal route.
