Storage media destruction

Old backup media can remain in cupboards, archives and equipment rooms long after the systems that created it have been replaced. We help organisations identify and arrange disposal of data-bearing media alongside their wider IT or document clearance.

What to include in your inventory

Tell us about backup tapes and cartridges, CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs, USB flash drives, memory cards and external storage. These formats need different handling; a mixed box should not be treated as though every item were a hard drive. We will confirm which materials can be accepted and which method is suitable before collection.

If you need an itemised record, separate the media you want listed and provide asset or serial numbers where available. Explain whether the collection includes damaged items, loose discs, tapes in cases or devices that contain removable storage.

Agree the handling and documentation

Some organisations require destruction at their premises; others use secure collection for processing elsewhere. Availability depends on the media, quantity and postcode. Ask us about on-site and off-site options and the records available for your chosen arrangement.

SSDs require their own assessment; see SSD destruction. For retired laptops, servers or other equipment that still contains storage, tell us about the complete devices as well as loose media.

Describe your media

Send an approximate count by type, the collection postcode and any packaging, witness or documentation requirements. We will confirm the practical next step. .
