Every school has one somewhere — an old interactive whiteboard, unplugged and pushed against a wall in a corridor or storage room, replaced by a newer panel but never actually dealt with. It’s too big to quietly bin, too old to be worth much, and nobody’s quite sure who’s supposed to arrange collection. So it sits there, sometimes for years.

Interactive whiteboard disposal doesn’t get anywhere near the attention that laptops or Chromebooks do, mostly because a whiteboard doesn’t look like a “computer” in the way people picture data risk. That assumption is worth questioning, because a lot of the boards installed in UK schools over the past decade aren’t just glorified projector screens — they’re networked, sometimes hold onboard storage, and carry the same WEEE and data obligations as anything else with a plug.

  • They don’t look like a data device. A whiteboard reads as a display, not something that stores or transmits information — even when the model in question does exactly that.

The Data Risk Schools Often Miss

Not every interactive whiteboard carries the same level of risk, and it’s worth knowing the difference before assuming either extreme.

Older, display-only boards — the kind that just project an image with basic touch input — genuinely don’t store data locally. These carry a WEEE disposal obligation but not really a data destruction one.

Newer interactive panels, particularly Android-based touchscreens and boards with built-in whiteboarding software, are a different situation entirely. Many of these:

  • Store cached files, saved lesson slides, or whiteboard sessions locally
  • Connect to the school’s network and may retain Wi-Fi credentials
  • Log into staff accounts for cloud-based lesson software
  • Include USB ports where staff have plugged in memory sticks, sometimes leaving residual data behind

Treating every board the same way — either destroying data on all of them unnecessarily, or assuming none of them need it — both miss the point. The right approach depends on what the specific model is actually capable of storing.

What Proper Disposal Looks Like

  1. Identify the board type. Check whether it’s a basic display board or a networked touchscreen panel with onboard storage. Model documentation or the supplier can usually confirm this quickly.
  2. Clear any stored credentials or accounts. For networked boards, remove saved Wi-Fi details and log out of any linked staff or cloud accounts before it leaves the classroom.
  3. Destroy data on any board with local storage. This should go through the same certified data destruction process used for laptops or servers, not be treated as a lesser task because the device is a whiteboard.
  4. Arrange collection through a registered WEEE carrier, not general waste or a casual skip run — interactive whiteboards fall under the same regulations as any other electronic equipment, regardless of their size or shape.
  5. Get a certificate for the collection, matched against the boards involved, particularly where any data destruction has taken place.
  6. Fold it into a wider clearout rather than a one-off job. If laptops, Chromebooks, or printers are already being collected as part of a scheduled on-site collection, whiteboards should go in the same visit rather than being left for “another time” that often never comes.

Why This Shouldn’t Be Left Until a Building Move

A lot of schools only actually deal with old interactive whiteboards when they’re forced to — a classroom refurbishment, a building move, or an Ofsted-adjacent tidy-up that finally clears the corridor. Waiting that long has a few downsides:

  • Boards accumulate in storage for years, taking up space that could be used for something else
  • Data on networked boards sits unaddressed the entire time, rather than being dealt with when the board was actually retired
  • A backlog of several years’ worth of boards becomes a bigger, more disruptive job than dealing with each one as it’s replaced

Building whiteboard disposal into the same cycle as other IT equipment — reviewed annually, alongside laptops and Chromebooks — avoids the corridor-full-of-boards problem entirely.

Interactive whiteboards are really just one more category in a school’s overall IT asset disposal picture, even though they get treated as an afterthought more often than laptops, Chromebooks, or printers.
